Compliance and Pre-Compliance EMC Testing
Most territories throughout the world require that your product has some form of EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility) test evidence. Normally this is done by using a third party to test your product against harmonised standards.
In the EU and the UK, under CE and UKCA marking regulations most electronic/electrical products are required to comply with EMC directives/regulations.
What is ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC)?
EMC testing ensures that your electrical and electronic products operate correctly and do not adversely affect, or are affected, by other products in the same EM environment.
Why is EMC Testing important?
All electronic devices have the potential to emit electromagnetic fields and their use in every-day life makes EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility) increasingly important.

- Accredited for testing of products for Australia & New Zealand where the RCM mark can be applied
Where equipment is fixed, physically large or your site needs assessment, on-site testing can be performed at your premises by our engineers to the same high standard.
CE Mark
CE (Conformité Européenne) marking has been required for the sale of certain products within the European Union since 1985. The CE mark allows unrestricted trade and movement of goods within the European Union as it indicates that the product meets required standards and protection of the environment requirements. Complying and understanding the associated standards and directives can be complicated.
UKCA Mark
Similar to CE requirements, the UKCA (United Kingdom Conformity Assessment) mark is a product mark that will become mandatory for certain products being offered for sale in Great Britain. Complying and understanding the associated standards and regulations can be complicated.
EMC Directive / Regulations & Standards
We test to a wide range of International and European Standards including the Generic and Product Specific Standards.
EMC Directive 2014/30/EU
Kiwa Electrical Compliance can test your products to ensure compliance with the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (2014/30/EU).
Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations
Compliance with the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations will be required, however in most cases it will be possible to use CE marking until 31 December 2024. From 31 December 2024 the UKCA mark is to be used. A Declaration of Conformity (DoC) is also required to be drawn up to UK Radio Equipment Regulations.
Please refer to our UKAS schedule for details of specific standards for which we hold accreditation. In agreement with UKAS, we operate a Flexible Schedule of Accreditation which now makes it possible for us to add some standards directly to our UKAS schedule.
If the standard you require testing to is not currently on our UKAS schedule, please contact us so that we can assess your test requirements.
Examples of products covered by our EMC testing services:
- Information Technology Equipment
- Industrial Equipment
- Laboratory Equipment
- Gaming Machines
- Domestic Appliances
- Medical Products
- Multimedia Equipment
- Automotive
- Aerospace
- Military
- Oil & Gas
- Railway
If you need to demonstrate that a product is fully compliant with a test standard, then full UKAS accredited EMC compliance testing can be carried out by Kiwa Electrical Compliance.
We can also carry out pre-compliance testing, which is a quicker cost- effective set of cut down tests to help you to understand your products' likelihood of complying with the requirements. Pre-compliance testing is normally carried out at various stages in the product development cycle.

Emissions tests
Testing to establish a devices EM emissions profile to identify whether it falls within the limits required to prevent interference to other products or radio services. The testing is required for CE and UKCA marking, as well as for entry into most international markets. Tests are generally carried out to the EN 550## series of standards.
Immunity / Susceptibility testing
Testing to establish a device’s immunity to electromagnetic interference caused by other products, radio services and natural phenomena. The testing is required for CE and UKCA marking, as well as for entry into most international markets. Tests are generally carried out to the EN61000-4-x series of standards.
