Food Contact

Kiwa supports companies to obtain compliance with (inter)national regulations for food contact materials. It is the responsibility of every manufacturer and supplier of polymeric materials, including rubber, to prove that his materials and products are safe for the intended food contact application.

In the EU, the Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 is applicable for all food contact materials. In short, the manufacturer shall state a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) for his products, in which he declares that:

  • The materials and products are manufactured following the requirements with respect to Good Manufacturing Practise (GMP) Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006.
  • He has a good traceability system.
  • The requirements according to the required migration tests are met.
  • The material recipe meets the positive substances lists.
  • For companies this means a lot of work and often in-house knowledge and capacity is not available to get the job done. Kiwa has the possibilities to help in all aspects regarding evaluation of material recipes, migration testing, factory production control and setting up necessary documentation and reports. As a result your company obtains a Declaration of Compliance. Extended with third party inspections on a regular basis a Kiwa Product Certificate can be granted, giving your products a competitive edge.

In the EU, plastics have to comply with the European Regulation (EC) No 10/2011. For rubber there are no harmonized requirements in the EU. National legislation is leading. Kiwa has the knowledge which requirements are valid for every country. E.g. in Germany the BfR requirements are applicable.

For the US market the FDA requirements FDA CFR21 parts 174-177 are applicable, implicating GMP, positive substances lists and migration tests. Kiwa also performs certification of food equipment materials against NSF/ANSI 51.
