Create digital trust with Kiwa eLicense

Means for authentication - from access passes to personal certifications - are often still made of paper or plastic. How convenient would it be if your employees or customers could always carry these credentials safely and reliably on their smartphones? This is possible with Kiwa eLicense, which securely provides validatable authentication means, certifications and other (personal) licenses. This generates a perfect digital replacement for physical credentials.

eLicense in practice

Example: Personal certification

A good example of the application of Kiwa eLicense is the provision of digital personal certificates. Professionals - from engineers, pilots, and taxi drivers to security and healthcare workers - currently demonstrate their expertise with a physical certification of paper or plastic that they regularly have to have checked and renewed by an independent certification authority. With Kiwa eLicense, this process becomes much simpler, as it provides a digital diploma or certificate that can be displayed from a smartphone.

Example: Digital seafarer's certificate

Together with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), Kiwa is exploring the possibilities of digitally issuing seafarer's certificates. The seafarer's certificate is the authorization of the seafarer to perform a certain role on a ship. EMSA has asked Kiwa to provide input for the technical and functional requirements of such an e-license. For EMSA, a digital seafarer's certificate offers particular advantages in terms of control: a digital proof is much less susceptible to fraud and can always be checked for authenticity and validity. In the eyes of EMSA, it is only a matter of time before all authorizations are issued digitally.

The technology behind Kiwa eLicense
  1. Kiwa eLicense consists of a backend and an app (the Kiwa eWallet);
  2. The Kiwa eLicense platform ensures that credentials are displayed correctly and securely on a phone. The responsibility for the content and its current status lies entirely with the party issuing the license or certificate;
  3. The issuer of authentication means, certifications and other (personal) licenses owns the 'master database'. Kiwa does not create a shadow database to provide content to the eLicense platform. This data is retrieved directly from the database of the issuing party, which is the 'single point of truth';
  4. Kiwa eLicense is based on ISO 18013-5. This is the quality standard for digital licenses already in practical use for driving licenses in Australia and the US;
  5. Kiwa eLicense is intended solely for displaying licenses/certificates on a phone. The platform is not intended for requesting documents and does not support payment services.
Privacy and data protection
  1. The quality standard ISO18013-5 serves as the basis for Kiwa eLicense. This globally accepted norm describes how personal data and other privacy-sensitive information should be handled within an e-license solution;
  2. Kiwa eLicense has been developed from the outset with safety and confidentiality in mind: 'privacy & security by design';
  3. Kiwa eLicense is 'user centralized', the user remains the owner of the content of a license or certificate. The content is stored exclusively on the phone of the license/certificate holder and not on the eLicense platform;
  4. PKI certificates are used to verify the origin and integrity of data;
  5. Based on 'informed consent', only relevant information from a license/certificate is shown to enforcers or other third parties (selective disclosure)’;
  6. Information is processed, transmitted and stored with encryption (as much as possible according to ISO 18013-5 standard).
Verification
  1. Online verification of the authenticity and validity of a license/certificate can be checked in real-time (according to ISO 18013-5);
  2. If there is no internet connection available, the authenticity and validity of a license/certificate can be verified offline via Bluetooth (according to ISO 18013-5);
  3. Remote verification (online sharing) takes place according to ISO18013-7.
Supported operating systems

Kiwa eLicense uses a smartphone app. This is suitable for smartphones with Bluetooth and NFC, running on the following operating systems:

  1. iOS (current version minus 1);
  2. Android (from Android 9).
