Analytisch Chemisch Laboratorium

Analytical Chemical Laboratory

Kiwa has decades of experience in researching and analyzing materials and gases. In our analytical chemical laboratory, we offer high-quality analysis services (including polymers and bromine and fluorine compounds) and conduct qualitative and quantitative determinations of components in gaseous fuels.

At Kiwa's analytical chemical laboratory in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, we offer high-quality analysis services using a pyrolysis-gc (for polymer research) and other analytical equipment. We also perform qualitative and quantitative determinations of components in gases such as natural gas, LPG, and biogas, or in other matrix gases such as air. Based on the composition, several properties of these gases can be calculated, such as the calorific value, Wobbe index, density, and compressibility.

Main component analysis of biogas and green gas

Kiwa can determine the main components that can occur in biogas and green gas (such as methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen). Our laboratory is the only one in the Netherlands authorized to report the main components in biogas and green gas under accreditation.

Gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS)

Kiwa's analytical chemical laboratory has a modern gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). This allows us to analyze trace components in gas and air, down to a very low level. The GC-MS is used, among other things, to analyze the different harmful trace components in natural gas, biogas, and green gas samples. We can also use it to analyze air samples for known and unknown chemical compounds.

Measuring gas quality

The quality of gas can be determined using measurement and/or monitoring systems for calorific value, density, Wobbe index, and compressibility. This sometimes involves detecting unwanted gas components such as siloxanes, sulfur compounds, halogenated hydrocarbons, and water.

Examples of analyses

Among the types of analyses we can perform are: identification of main components and properties, higher hydrocarbons in natural gas (including aromatics), sulfur compounds, tetrahydrothiophene (THT), halogenated hydrocarbons, silicon compounds, qualitative scan for trace components, odor of natural gas and green gas, higher hydrocarbons in green gas/biogas (such as terpenes and MEK), and much more.

Laboratory accreditations

The Dutch accreditation council RvA has accredited Kiwa Technology's analytical chemical laboratory for the analysis of main components in natural gases of distribution quality in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025, registration number L469. This has also been the case for other combustible gases for several years. In addition, Kiwa Technology is certified for ISO 9001:2015 by TÜV Rheinland.

Analysis possibilities

If you need to analyze polymers, brominated and fluorinated compounds, gases, biogas, trace components in gas and air, we can help. We also offer analysis of other products. Please contact us for more information.

The quality of hydrogen – Requirements and checks

In this whitepaper our expert takes a closer look at the quality requirements of hydrogen. What is the impact of those contaminants? What quality requirements are set? How can these be checked?
