EU Launches Public Consultation on Key Implementations of the Drinking Water Directive
The Drinking Water Directive will be of utmost importance to ensure the safety and quality of drinking water throughout the European Union. Currently, the public consultation has been opened on the draft ‘Implementing Decisions and Delegated Regulations related to the implementation of Article 11’ of the Drinking Water Directive. What is it about?
This Drinking Water Directive addresses the "materials and products in contact with water intended for human consumption” and now published is the proposal for the future working method. At present, rules and regulations vary by country and/or region. Implementation of the Drinking Water Directive will harmonize these regulations for the entire European Union (EU)
By doing this, the EU has taken a significant step toward enhancing the quality and safety of drinking water. In a move that underlines the commitment to safeguard public health, the EU has launched a public consultation on the draft Implementing Decisions and Delegated Regulations related to the implementation of Article 11 of the Drinking Water Directive.
Public Consultation
The public consultation, currently open for participation, specifically focuses on the following areas:
- Delegated Regulations on Product Marking (6.DA): This component of the consultation process pertains to marking products that come into contact with water intended for human consumption. Ensuring proper and standardized labelling of such products is essential to guaranteeing transparency and safety for consumers.
- Delegated Regulations for Inclusion or Removal from European Positive Lists (3.DA): The second area of consultation deals with procedures regarding the inclusion or removal of substances, compositions, and constituents from the European positive lists. These lists are critical for determining the acceptability of materials and products in contact with drinking water.
The consultation window for these two areas is open from October 16 to November 13, 2023.
In addition, the consultation covers:
- Implementing Decisions for Testing Methodologies (1.IA): Methods for testing and accepting starting substances, compositions, and constituents to be included in the European positive lists.
- European Positive Lists (2.IA): The procedures for establishing these lists are under review to ensure that only the safest materials and products make their way into contact with drinking water.
- Testing and Acceptance of Final Materials (4.IA): The procedures and methods for testing and accepting final materials used in a product are open for public input.
- Delegated Regulation on Conformity Assessment Procedures for Products (5.DA): This component focuses on conformity assessment procedures, ensuring products meet the required standards for safety and quality.
These Implementing Decisions will be open for consultation from October 19 to November 16, 2023.
