Norwegian-Dutch End of Waste collaboration takes flight
In close collaboration, Kiwa Norway and Kiwa Netherlands now offer compliance assessment of EU regulation 1221/2009 (EMAS III) and EU regulation 333/2011 (End Of Waste Scrap metal).
Product manager for recycling Rob Franken from Kiwa Netherlands, initiated the work based on Dutch market needs. It was identified that current accreditations in Norway, for the EMAS scheme, could be relevant. Kiwa Norway’s Lead auditor and scheme responsible for EMAS, Ane Grete Larsen took the challenge. Due to COVID-19 it was necessary to think out of the box to come up with solutions that supported our customer and ensured compliance with accreditation requirements.
Initial EMAS assessment was performed by use of combined remote auditing and on-site auditing. This then generated an opportunity to expand the services to include End Of Waste (EoW) assessments. The first EoW assessments are currently in progress.
Global industry and business
Recycling of waste and sales of recycled materials is a major global industry. It is estimated (figures varies by source but have the same expectation trend) that by 2025, the value of the global waste management industry is expected to hit $530 billion, from $330.6 billion in 2017.
Global recycling rates are also rising, with metal predicted to reach $434.55 billion by 2023. Paper will climb from $4.29 billion in 2017 to $5.42 billion in 2024. Plastics are also part of the story and are expected to rise from USD $25 billion in 2018 to $33.8 billion by 2023.
According to Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), Europe exports 21.793 million tonnes of steel scrap annually, representing a substantial business area.
EU Circular Economy Action Plan
The European Commission has adopted a Circular Economy Action Plan, part of the European Green Deal, Europe’s agenda for sustainable growth. It introduces legislative and non-legislative measures targeting areas where action at the EU level brings added value.
By offering compliance assessment of EU regulation 1221/2009 (EMAS III) and EU regulation 333/2011, we are glad to offer services that contribute to the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan.
