Kiwa and Alliander are building a demo hydrogen house

Kiwa and Alliander, a Dutch company that handles the distribution of energy in a third of the Netherlands, are currently building a hydrogen house together in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. A training location designed as a residence, where professionals can learn how to make the current natural gas supply suitable for hydrogen in residential areas. The demo house will be put into service as planned next fall.

Hydrogen pilot project

Alliander is currently preparing a pilot in the Dutch municipality of Lochem, in which homes with a natural gas connection are transferred to hydrogen. The trial takes place in a neighbourhood where many older homes are located that are less suitable for the application of heat pumps or district heating. Replacing natural gas with hydrogen is therefore an interesting alternative, also because the existing natural gas network can be used and central heating boilers that run on hydrogen can be applied.

Hydrogen partner

Because most engineers and installers have little experience in converting gas networks for the use of hydrogen, Alliander was looking for a partner who understands hydrogen and has a hydrogen permit. Kiwa turned out to be the right party; Kiwa’s location in Apeldoorn not only has a permit for working with hydrogen, but Kiwa is also one of the leading trainers in the Netherlands in the field of hydrogen.

Training center

Kiwa and Alliander are currently busy with the construction and furnishing of the hydrogen house, which will have a heating system, kitchen and meter cupboard. There will also be a course and meeting room for training and other meetings. In addition, residents of the pilot neighbourhood in Lochem will soon be able to take a look to see what adjustments are needed in their homes.
