Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being applied across all fields through the use of information technology and is expected to become one of the key economic drivers. As a result of this trend, certain applications may cause societal issues in the coming years.
The ISO/IEC 42001 standard provides requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an AI management system within an organization. The unique characteristics of AI, such as its ability to continuously learn and improve, or its potential lack of transparency and explainability may raise additional concerns compared to traditional methods of operation, necessitating alternative safeguards. Adopting an AI management system to extend the existing management framework is a strategic decision for organizations.
What you need to know
ISO/IEC 42001 reviews how to effectively address the intended use of AI systems, performance requirements, and their impact on individuals, groups, or society. It also aims to enhance the integrity and reliability of performance evaluations by examining the methods, processes, and criteria used to assess AI systems.
The necessity of adopting an AI management system is as follows:
- Efficient Management
Effectively integrate and manage AI technologies and data to maximize organizational efficiency and productivity. - Enhanced Ethical Responsibility
Ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI systems, building societal trust. - Legal and Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with legal requirements related to AI technologies, such as data privacy and algorithmic fairness. - Risk Management
Systematically assess and address the technical, ethical, and social risks that AI systems may pose. - Strengthening Competitiveness
Integrate AI technology into business strategies to gain a competitive edge.
Getting certified with Kiwa
With the launch of OpenAI, ChatGPT, and other advancements, the world has entered the full-fledged era of Artificial Intelligence. In response, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/IEC) announced the international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS) in December 2023.
Since the ISO/IEC 42001 adopts the common High-Level Structure (HLS) of existing ISO management system standards, it requires the integration of organizational processes and the overall management system structure. Additionally, it emphasizes AI risk management and continuous improvement through the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle.
Kiwa will assist organizations that use or develop products or services utilizing AI in successfully establishing, implementing, maintaining, and managing the AI management system (AIMS) in accordance with the international standard. This will help organizations meet the required conditions and requirements for sustainable AI management.

Contract
If you choose Kiwa as the partner in your certification process, you can conclude the contract.
Trial audit
Prior to the certification process, you can have a pilot audit performed. The pilot audit is optional and gives you insight into the extent to which your system meets the requirements of the standard.
Initial visit and documentation review
Before the actual certification audit takes place, we make an introductory visit to your organization. The process starts with an assessment of, among other things, your (digital) documents for compliance with the requirements of the chosen certification standard(s). The documentation review and the initial visit are concluded with a report and the final audit program.
Certification audit (initial audit)
During this audit everything revolves around the practical operation of your management system. On the basis of interviews with management members and employees, Kiwa will focus on the predefined areas of attention during this audit, without losing sight of the requirements of the standard(s).
Periodic audits
After the certificate is obtained, its validity is ensured by conducting a periodic audit. These audits are also conducted based on areas of concern.
Recertification
A recertification audit is recommended four months before the expiration date. Upon successful completion, the validity of the certificate is extended by three years.
